MAGIC tells the story of a young girl who wakes up from an accident with no memory of who she is or the extraordinary gifts she’s forgotten. Determined to find her voice and reclaim her power, Magic embarks on a spiritual journey. She encounters remarkable women who have shaped the world with their courage and wisdom, helping her rediscover her true self. MAGIC is a restorative tale of self-discovery, resilience, and the shakable power of Black women’s voices. Through the lens of restorative theatre and Kreative Liberation, this work is about igniting connection, healing, and empowerment, and will leave you questioning the true magic within us all.
WHAT TO EXPECT
RUN TIME: 90 minutes, plus a 15 minute intermission.
POST-PERFORMANCE: On Thursday, Feb 20, there will be a 30 minute talkback with the creator, Kiyaana Cox Jones, the cast, and Dr. Ebonie L. Cunningham Stringer, Associate Professor at Penn State University, immediately following the performance.
SENSITIVITY STATEMENT: MAGIC is a deeply immersive and transformative production that explores complex and multifaceted themes, including racism, sexism, mental health, personal identity, manipulation, and the enduring impact of life’s challenges. While the play serves as a space for healing, reflection, and growth, it also delves into the realities of systemic oppression, personal struggles, and societal injustices.
We recognize that these themes may evoke strong emotions, memories, and reflections, particularly for those who have experienced similar challenges in their own lives. Our intention is to approach these subjects with care, respect, and responsibility, fostering dialogue and awareness without exploiting pain or perpetuating harm.
As you engage with the production, we encourage you to honor your emotions and responses. Resources and support will be made available for those who wish to process their experiences in a safe and compassionate environment. We also invite audiences to approach the play with an open heart and mind, understanding that its purpose is to illuminate, inspire, and create space for shared humanity and understanding.
Through MAGIC, we aim to hold a brave and restorative space where the complexities of life can be explored with dignity and care, reminding us of the resilience of the human spirit and the possibility of transformation.
This show is recommended for ages 13+ as there are conversations surrounding racism, sexism, and the violence of silence and erasure, that might be difficult for folks who are younger.
ARTISTIC CONTEXT & INTENT STATEMENT: Magic is a work that integrates spirituality, biblical references, Afrocentric perspectives, and Eastern psychology as part of its exploration of healing, resilience, and transformation.
This production represents the shared humanity of how different people worship, process loss, and seek collective healing. Magic follows the journey of a Black-identified woman as she navigates the many paths toward restoration, healing, and self-discovery. While the play reflects her unique experience, your personal beliefs and perspectives are welcomed in this space.
Theatre is a reflection of life, and life looks different for each of us. We invite you to engage with Magic with an open heart, honoring both the story being told and the diverse ways we all experience healing and transformation.
[Image description: The silhouette of a young Black girl, facing to the right, about to take a step forward. She wears a white button down dress and has giant butterfly wings growing out of her back. She is surrounded by butterflies, including two purple butterfly pins in her hair. Behind her head we see the shadow of her future self, the woman that she will become, engulfing her in a vibrant violet. Written on her dress is the word “Magic”, and in the bottom right corner we see “By Kiyaana Cox Jones”.]
